Railroaded fabric refers to the way a fabric’s pattern or design is oriented on the roll. The fabric is sometimes woven with the design running across the width of the fabric and it is expected that the fabric is railroaded to allow the design to run as planned. It can also be a design choice to lay the fabric on furniture so that the pattern runs sideways instead of the intended direction. This lets a single piece of fabric cover a sofa back smoothly, without visible seams. Many fabrics can be railroaded, which is especially useful for large sofas. Fabrics that can’t be railroaded are simply used in their standard direction from the roll.
